I answered an ad online. I went the next day at 2pm. I was only asked one question...was I ready to work.
She gave me an address and told me it was a new supermarket and I was to help 'set' the store. I was asked did I know what that meant, of course I didn't, so she told me. She also told me that she can tell by my eyes that I was a fast learner. By the way she said, my name is Donna and take my cell number down, put it in your phone now. I did and it was the smartest move I have ever made.
I worked for this supermarket chain for over 15 years off and on. After 3 years, I saw that I was never going to be a Deli Manager, I quit but.. I stayed in touch with Donna and she would email me temp work, work for about a month or two. I was working in a restaurant, 12 hour days, 6 days a week. She would email me and just say..go do you thing for me please.
I was out of work for 14 months, I thought about calling her looking for work but.. it has been well over 7 years..no, about 15 years since I called her or she got in touch with me. About 8 months ago she emailed me to see how I'm holding up, if I was still alive. She said that it's dead for jobs across the board but hang in there. I replied, I'm well and I will.
Now here in NYC they can't find people to fill positions in Food Service. Who wants to work when they can get a unemployment check and do nothing.
